What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-informed therapy that helps people process distressing memories that feel “stuck” and continue to cause triggers in daily life. These may be traumatic, humiliating, shameful, or deeply uncomfortable experiences.
What happened may never fully make sense—but EMDR can reduce the intensity of memories so they feel less overwhelming and less likely to intrude on your present life.

How EMDR Works

EMDR doesn’t erase the past. Instead, it helps the brain reprocess memories so they carry less emotional weight. Using guided eye movements or other gentle bilateral stimulation, the memory often becomes less “sticky,” leaving more room for calm, clarity, and choice in the present.

Trauma-Informed Safety

As a trauma-trained clinician, I will never rush you into distressing material. Before we approach any painful memory, we focus on strengthening your inner resources. This includes creating a Safe Calm Place—a mental refuge you can return to whenever emotions feel too intense.
I’ll also assess how you currently manage emotions and provide tools to steady yourself before we go further. We don’t dive in right away—you set the pace, and you remain in control the entire time. My role is to guide and support you so the process feels safe and manageable.

What EMDR Can Offer

  • Distressing memories may feel less charged over time
  • Daily triggers can become less disruptive
  • Emotions tied to the past may feel easier to manage
  • Greater capacity opens up for presence, balance, and growth

EMDR Therapy FAQs

Do I have to talk about all the details of my past?
No. You don’t need to share every detail of what happened in order for EMDR to be effective. We focus on how the memory shows up in your body and emotions, rather than retelling the entire story.

What if I get overwhelmed during a session?
You are in control at all times. We start by building resources like your Safe Calm Place so you have ways to steady yourself. If emotions ever feel too strong, we pause, use grounding tools, and only move forward when you feel ready.

How long does EMDR take?
It depends on the individual. Some clients notice changes after a few sessions, while others may need longer. EMDR is not a quick fix, but it often helps reduce the intensity of distressing memories more efficiently than talk therapy alone.

Will EMDR erase my memories?
No. EMDR doesn’t erase the past. Instead, it helps the memory feel less “sticky,” so it doesn’t trigger you as strongly in the present.

Is EMDR safe?
Yes—when facilitated by a trauma-trained clinician, EMDR is considered safe and effective. We go at your pace, and you remain in control throughout the process.

Is EMDR right for me?

If you feel stuck with memories or experiences that still carry a lot of weight, EMDR may help reduce their intensity so you can live with more calm and balance. We’ll talk together about whether it’s the right fit for you.

Ready to Explore EMDR?

If you’re curious about EMDR and whether it may be a good fit for you, I’d be glad to talk it through. You don’t have to know all the answers or be “ready” to dive into difficult memories. Our first step is simply a conversation about what you’re hoping for and how we might work together.

Reach out today to schedule a consultation. Let’s take this one step at a time—at your pace, in a way that feels safe.
